Here is an extremely rare 4 zecchini coin from the period of The Knights of Malta. This gold coin was issued during the reign of Grand Master Wignacourt in 1695.
The obverse clearly show the patron saint of the order, St John, presenting the flag of the Order to the kneeling Grand Master wearing a surcoat emblazoned with the arms of the Order.
The reverse shown the arms of the Grand Master Adrien Wignacourt on an oval shield, surmounted by a coronet and supported by palm branches. The '5' in the date 1695 which flanks the arms, was struck over '4' and can be clearly seen on the right hand side of the shield.
Very few specimens exists of this coin (in the range of 5 - 10). A certainly extremely rare coin in this superb condition.
