MDINA - A History of its Urban Space and Architecture
This superbly illustrated book explores in great detail the history of the urban
space and architecture of Mdina so that the reader will be able to understand
the nature and impact of the successive Bronze Age, Classical, Medieval, Baroque
and recent building overlaps that have resulted in what is considered by many to
be one of the finest walled towns in the Central Mediterranean. A central theme
in this book concerns the role of the 1693 earthquake in creating a medieval
baroque architectural dictionary which represents one of the unique features of
the town of Mdina.

THE AUBERGE D'ARAGON
A short history peppered with anecdote. This building, as much as any building
in Malta, has been firmly at the center-stage throughout recent history. Its
origins under the Knights are fascinating, its early days under the British,
well worth recording, and its later years as the virtual seat of government,
momentous. A good read for one and all.

ENGLAND Richard (1994)
EYE TO I
Malta's doyen of the architectural profession, enjoying an international
reputation in his metier, turns his hand to poetry. Artist and photographer has
excellent qualifications to indulge in the sensitivity necessary to create
poetry. He has undoubtedly embraced at least three of the daughters of Zeus,
those muses who personified music and lyric poetry (Euterpe), epic poetry and
eloquence (Calliope) and love poetry (Erato). Patriotic, dreamy, earthy,
sensitive and loving: there is much to read. Special drawing for this edition by
Pasmore and portrait of the author by Sandrina. Foreword by J.J.Cremona.
Published originally with Italian translation and introduction by Gaetano Gangi.
Joe Friggieri emphasizes the fact that this book is a journey 'between
remembrance and desire'.

ESPINOSA RODRIGUEZ Antonio (1990)

PAINTINGS AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM
OF FINE ARTS IN MALTA
Nothwithstanding its small size Malta contains an appreciable
artistic patrimony that is largely the result of its eventful history and
cultural experience. The National Museum of Fine Arts is the repository of an
impotant art collection that encompasses works by such well known painters as
Guido Reni, Ribera, Le Valentin, Mattia Preti and many other reputable foreign
and local masters. Here is, for the first time a publication that offers to the
general public an evaluation of the entire picture collection of permanent
display in what is one of Malta’s major museums. With a few exceptions, that
warranted pairing, the paintings are seperately treated and discussed. All the
paintings under review are illustrated and reproduced in colour. Every entry is
headed by the name of the artist, dates and, where relevant, a short
bibliographical note. Title of the ouvre, medium, measurements in centimetres,
whether signed and dated, provenance and date of acquisition and exhibitions in
which the work has featured are data that supplement descriptions and critical
analyses. Pertinent bibliographical references conclude each single entry.
A Foreword by the Hon. Minister of Education, an introduction and a
historical overview of the National Museum of fine Arts as well as a
comprehensive complete bibliography, list of all the works discussed and a
general index complement the main body of this book. This publication is the
fruit of painstaking research and study carried out by the author in the course
of several years. It is a labour of love which, it is hoped, will contribute
towards the better understanding of Malta’s cultural heirloom.
