Early Maltese Stamps

1860 - 1935

The first Maltese stamp was issued in 1860. The 'Half Penny Yellow' comes in a variety of shades, watermarks and perforations. This is mainly due to the different issue dates throught it's chequered introduction from 1860-1864. Up to 1864 the Half Penny Yellow was in a class of it's own, no other Maltese stamp was being used untill the definitive issue of 1865 whereby a variety of 6 values with subvarieties totaling a total of 10 stamps in the set. This set was only limited to a maximum value of one shilling, the 'Pale Violet'. Within exactly a year, also one of Malta's very own landmark in philately, the 'Five Shillings Rose' was issued (Number 16 Below). The highest value in a set kept on increasing until the 1889 issue of five different values, consisting of two varieties of the lowest value the 1/4d or as inscribed 'One Farthing'. This set included 2 new values, the 'Olive Grey' 2 shillings sixpence, and the 'Blue Black' 10 shillings.
