Grand Masters Of Malta 1530 - 1798

This is a complete list of all 28 Grand Masters who ruled here in Malta between 1530 and 1798.

Before coming to Malta, The Sovereign Order of St John minted its own coinage in rhodes. However pope Clement VIIth convinced Charles Vth of Spain to allow the Sovereign priveledge of striking coins in Malta. Although the Islands were donated to the Order on the 24th March 1530, Grand Master Phillipe Villiers de L'Isle-Adam did not arrive in Malta before the 26th October of the same year. L'Isle-Adam had learnt that the Master of the Mint in Messina had instigated the Emperor to deny the Order authority to mint its own coinage. Thus at one time L'Isle-Adam had also 'threatened' to withdraw from Malta. At a later stage the Knights of Malta had the authority to mint their own coins, and upto 1798 all coins bearing the Knights of Malta were struck in Malta.

The knights of Malta were well cultured and had a desire for quality worksmanship. Their coins were struck with great care and details. In the early 1700's Grnad Master De Vilhena had set new standards in the Maltese coinage. His coins are to date the most decorative and sought after. Here below is a complete list of all the Grand Masters and coins which we had in stock in the past.
