1st Official Government Of Malta Banknote Issue

The first official banknotes where issued in August of 1914. These were the first set of banknotes to be issued in Sterling under the title of ‘The Government of Malta’. All the series were short lived since demonetization came in just a year later in September 1915.

Shown here above is Malta’s very own ‘First’ banknote (Said #1). Issued on the 12th August 1914, this 10 shilling denomination bears the serial number BA000001, clearly indicating that this is the 1st official Malta banknote in every aspect.

Printed in Malta at ‘The Government Printing Press’ and dated 12th August 1914, this banknote measures 102 x 81mm and bears the signature of John E. Clauson, Lieutenant-Governor and Chief Secretary to Government. Although printed on un-watermarked paper, it is still embossed with the seal of Malta.
