Malta Decimal Sets & Commemorative Coins From 1972-2008 From the year of decimalization, which was in 1972, The Central Bank Of Malta has been the issuing authority until today, for all commemorative, decimal, gold and silver sets, hereunder are just a few of the sets issued since 1972 to date. Throughout the years there had been various sets produced by Maltese as well as Foreign Engravers and Designers. In 1972 four sets were issued, Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) decimal sets, as well as a Gold and Silver Set. The Decimal sets were struck at The Royal Mint, in London, a mintage of 8,000 Proof sets were manufactured, and an unknown amount for the BU sets. Although the Gold and Silver sets are dated 1972, they were issued by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) in Rome, on the 30th of January 1973. There are 15,648 complete sets of Lm50, LM20 and Lm5 gold coins. Soon after the decimalization, the SMOM showed interest in Malta, and in 1973 they had donated two new minting machines, which were located at the Central Bank. The mint was then inaugurated in December 1973 at the premises of the Central Bank in Valletta. On March the 5th, 1976, an agreement was signed by The Central Bank of Malta and The Franklin Mint Corporation of Pennsylvania, USA, granting the latter the exclusive rights to mint distribute and sell the Decimal Proof coins of Malta. This first agreement expired on December 31st, 1978. Mean while the firm Spink & Son Ltd. of London were accorded exclusive world wide selling rights for the 1977 proof set of Gold and Silver coins. The firm was also granted the sole right to sell the BU coins outside Malta and Italy, where this right was reserved for the Central Bank of Malta and the SMOM respectively. On the 17th January 1979, a new three year agreement was signed by the Central Bank of Malta and The Franklin Mint. This agreement was on the same lines as the first such agreement signed in 1976.
