by

Emmanuel Azzopardi (2005)

Malta - This History Of The Coinage (2005 - 2nd edition)

Published by Said International in 1992 (1st Edition), Emmanuel Azzopardi compiles a comprehensive study of Malta’s Coinage through history, events and culture. The 2nd Edition published in 2005 depicts over 1300 colour illustrations and descriptions, thus quenches the knowledge of every numismatist and compiles an encyclopedia of all coins used in Malta.

In order to enhance this book, extensive studies and references have been made to publications by Sear, Seaby, Furse, Calleja Schembri, Coleiro, Restelli/Sammut and more. All coins have cross references to the above authors with an accompanied standard M.H. (Malta History of the Coinage) reference number.

The author divides the book into four sections; Ancient Malta, Medieval Malta, Order of St. John of Jerusalem or better known as the Knights of Malta and the post 1800 period conjunctively the French & British Rule and the Central Bank of Malta Coinage. Each section is carefully described not only through a numistmatists eye but from a Historic point of view, providing important information about wars, hoards, legacies, rulers, and The Republic.
