This short account of Villegaignon's life, product of sixteenth century influences, shows a heroic high-principled man and excellent writer. Following problems at university, where he met Calvin, Villegaignon joined the Order's Navy through family connections, training under the best captains. His stint in Malta was marked by Grandmaster de Homedes' grave displeasure for justly critising his mismanagement, and by Mdina's inhabitants' respect. He moved on to diplomatic missions, Protestantism and Brazil, whence his shattered ideas and reconversion to Catholicism.
