Romano - Maltese Coinage
Following the Roman conquest , the Maltese Islands were allowed to strike Municipal coins as from the last decade of the 3rd century B.C., during Malta’s early years as part of the Sicilian province. Rome allowed its provinces to mint coins in bronze. The earliest minted coins must have been in about 212 B.C. when Sicily came under the Roman rule and Malta was incorporated in the Sicilian province. Eleven coin types were struck between the 3rd Century B.C. and the 1st Century B.C. Towards the mid 1st Century B.C. Gozo was allowed to mint a type coin of its own, when Gozo enjoyed municipal independence from Malta. This coin has the denomination mark value ‘V’ which is equivalent to a ‘Quincunx’ These Gozitian coins were minted during the year 40 B.C. under the influence of Mark-Anthony’s fleet stationed in Sicilian harbours.. All the coins listed here have a MH reference number which refers to the book by Emmanuel Azzopardi 'Malta The History Of The Coinage' For more information follow this link to view the write up of Mr. Emanuel Azzopardi, author of our publication 'Malta The History Of The Coinage'
