Sovereign Military Order Of Malta SMOM
The Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) was founded by the Blessed Fr Gerrard in 1099. Previously known as the Order of Jerusalem they travelled and settled in Malta in 1530 by decree of King Charles Vth granting them the island of Malta. In 1798 Napoleon besieged Malta and Grand Master Ferdinand Hompesch was forced to leave. In exile, the Order moved to Russia and later found its resting home in Rome. Where until today the Order's Head Office and Operation is run from Via Condotti in Rome. The SMOM have issued postal stamps since 1966. Keeping in mind the religious attachment with the order, most of the SMOM stamps are very picturesque and show various themes such as Art, Religious, Flags, Medals, Christmas, Grand Masters, Knights, Costumes and Armour and many more. With St. John as the patron Saint of the Order, various stamps have been issued in commemoration. Here below are the links showing all the issues of the order from 1966 to date.
